Ayurvedic Medicine is an ancient healing practice that originated in India well over 3000 years ago and is now practiced all over the world.
Ayurveda is a holistic practice that is centered around specific natural elements; Earth, Space, Air, Water, and Fire.
These elements combine to create Doshas. The Doshas include; Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Everyone has a unique combination of Doshas. Some say it is as specific as your fingerprint.
According to Ayurvedic teachings, every person tends to have one dominant Dosha. All Doshas are present in some degree all working synergistically with each other.
Each Dosha comes with certain traits that, when imbalanced, can exhibit as symptoms specific to that Dosha. Below we briefly outline the basics for each Dosha.
Vata Dosha is a combination of Air & Space. This combination can be summed up as cold, dry, light, spacious, flowing, and rough.
Pitta Dosha is a combination of Fire & Water. This combination can be described as hot, sharp, oily, liquid and moving.
Kapha Dosha is a combination of Water & Earth. This combination can be summed up as soft, slow, bold, stable, heavy.
When all Doshas are in perfect balance, this is called Tridosha, which is said to be very rare, but certainly possible.
When the Doshas are out of balance or imbalanced, we begin to see and feel unpleasant symptoms like very dry skin, very oily skin, inflammation, even things like psoriasis, and more!
Every individual Dosha combination manifests differently based on how the elements work together.
The Ayurvedic teachings tells us that knowing your unique combination of Doshas isn't as important as understanding what your dominant or pre-Dosha is. Which makes sense...
In our mind, we see it as being much easier to balance what you know to be out of balance then to search for what may not even be there.
We have put together some graphics to help you understand what Dosha may be manifesting as your dominant Dosha as it relates to your Skin.
Below, choose the Dosha skin type that best describes your skin.
Remember, you are a combination of all Doshas, so you may resonate with one or more.
The key is to pick the one that BEST describes your skin.
